What's Happening?

The 10 most pirated TV series of 2013

Piracy is a huge problem in the entertainment industry and something needs to be done so that it ends. Artists are losing out and its a total disregard for the hard work of other people. It's rude.

In SMtv's interview with The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln, we spoke about the popularity of the show and how AMC and Fox International Channels were doing their best to air the show as close to the US air date as possible. The Walking Dead does that and airs less than 24 hours around the world. That is just one way to curb piracy.

However, it's sometimes a bit flattering to know that your TV show is one of the most pirated shows in the world. TorrentFreak released their top 10 most pirated TV shows of 2013 and as expected, it's mostly the best shows that are currently ruling the TV industry. Here's the full list.

1. Game of Thrones (5.9 million)
2. Breaking Bad (4.2 million)
3. The Walking Dead (3.6 million)
4. The Big Bang Theory (3.4 million)
5. Dexter (3.1 million)
6. How I Met Your Mother (3 million)
7. Suits (2.6 million)
8. Homeland (2.4 million)
9. Vikings (2.3 million)
10. Arrow (2.2 million)

It's surprising to see Arrow and Viking on the list. They are joined by Suits. It's however not so surprising to see that most of the shows that made the 2012 list have remained on the list- Game of Thrones, Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, The Walking Dead and Homeland.

Let's hope 2014 will have less pirated TV shows. But we doubt.

What now for Homeland Season 4? Creator, Alex Gansa weighs in

Alex Gansa (right) with Homeland stars, Damian Lewis and Claire Danes.
Ah Homeland. So they finally killed off Brody. Two seasons too late. But then who could blame them? Brody was a popular character and his relationship with Carrie Mathison was the pulse of the show. Even though it wasn't meant to be.

The season 3 finale of the show brought along with it some surprising changes, which means that the fourth season will be a totally different show. Is it me or is Homeland taking its cue from American Horror Story? Not that it's a bad thing.

Homeland creator, Alex Gansa, spoke to The Daily Beast  about the show's direction for the fourth season, which will air in October next year. Here is the excerpt from the interview, which is available here

Why did Brody have to die?His shelf life had expired. It was time. We spent a lot of hours in the story room figuring out what we could do with his character, and a lot of the emotional landscape had been crossed. We didn’t want to repeat ourselves.
Then we thought of this cool thing Saul could do with him to find political asylum in Iran and use that operationally. So it just felt like once he was in Iran, he wasn’t getting out of Iran—and his time was up.
A lot of viewers are very upset by Brody’s death. Some are saying that they are never going to watch again—that the show is over for them now. What do you have to say to them? That’s an individual decision for everybody to make about whether the series for them is over. And I would be the first to admit that that image of that star on the wall feels like a bit of a series finale, not a season finale. The question is how invested are you in the characters who are left standing? Do you want to see what happens to Carrie as a mother and as an intelligence officer? One of the great joys of Season 4 is going to be seeing Carrie actually do something she was trained to do, and that is be a case officer in a foreign capital somewhere.
It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of where you want to go in Season 4.This idea of seeing Carrie overseas somewhere feels great to us. But we haven’t convened a story room and I don’t know whether that idea will get any purchase. But look: she’s on her way to Istanbul and she’s eight-and-a-half months pregnant, so we have some big things to resolve.
It’s going to be a different series. We are going to reinvent. We’re going to reboot. And hopefully we can tell a compelling enough story to draw some of those people back.
But god: my heart goes out to all the people who fell in love with Nicholas Brody as a character. We shot that hanging sequence the very last day of episode 12. It was the very last thing we did in Morocco. We shot all night, and I must say, at 7:00 in the morning, when it was over and I gave Damian a big hug and thanked him for all his amazing work, I slunk off to a little courtyard and I cried.
What’s the worst mistake that Homeland has made? And conversely, what decision or moment are you most proud of?I’m going to let the mistake one just go by. It’s sort hard not to feel defensive about criticism, and for me to wade into that… Look, the Brody family has been a bit of a third rail. I guess I would say the biggest mistake we made, possibly, was giving Dana another love interest in this season. But that said, I think without it, that scene in episode 9 when she and her father were reunited in that motel doorway may not have had as much power as it did.

BREAKING: StarSat to discontinue the TLC channel

Shocking is what this is.

StarSat, the former TopTV, released a statement on their Facebook Page, stating that they are discontinuing the TLC channel. The lifestyle channel, which is one of the most popular Discovery channels worldwide, boasts shows like Cake Boss, Say Yes to the Dress, OWN, Toddlers and Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo. The last day that the channel will be flighted on StarSat will be on 31 December 2013.

Here's the statement:

Pay television StarSat (previously TopTV) announced that the TLC lifestyle and entertainment network will be discontinued on the 31 December 2013. This is as a result of a decision by the channel’s owners to enter into an exclusivity arrangement with the competitor pay television network.
StarSat wishes to assure current and future customers of its commitment to providing world-class entertainment; and will continue bringing some of the world’s top branded channels to South African audiences.

StarSat is currently phasing in new channels for subscribers and hopes to bring the total number of channels on air to over 100 by January 1, 2014.

StarSat subscribers have seen a lot of change this year alone. Will this be the final straw? We can't deny that the network is progressively getting worse. The Chinese content, the many Indian channels and the lack of more lifestyle and sports channels are the downfall of this network. Fine Living Network has mostly old content and without TLC it's going to be very hard to keep the consumers who liked the channel.

Is it us or is it instead of more, better channels, the good channels keep getting removed from the network?

Nicky Greenwall talks The Big Picture

Nicky Greenwall’s new show, The Big Picture,  is one that movie lovers will enjoy. Buhle Mbonambi chatted to her

It’s unbelievable that Nicky Greenwall has a new show so soon after giving birth to her second baby, a son, Riley. But for those who know her work ethic and drive, it’s not much of a surprise. The Big Picture, airing on Tuesdays on e.tv at 9.30pm, is Nicky’s latest show for the channel under Greenwall Productions. I asked her about The Big Picture, her old show, The Showbiz Report, motherhood and what her thoughts are on the local film industry.

What is The Big Picture all about?
The Big Picture is a show about movies “of the moment”. The show features all the latest red carpet premieres of local and international releases in the week before they make their debut at South African cinemas.
Why did you believe that South Africa needs a movie preview type show?
We want the show to put all these releases into a local context for our audiences. These days there is so much out there to choose from – people need to really be convinced that a movie is for them before they buy a ticket or hit that “download” button.
How different is it from The Showbiz Report?
I guess you could call it an update of The Showbiz Report. The major difference being this show deals only with movie releases, not entertainment news in general.
There are similarities, especially in presenting style. When you began planning the show, was it in some way a replacement for The Showbiz Report?
I can see that audiences might see a similarity – mainly because of my voiceovers. The truth is there are hundreds of these shows out there. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. The idea is to give audiences the information they want in the most entertaining way possible – hopefully we have achieved that.
How different is The Big Picture from all the other movie preview type shows we’ve had in South Africa?
Well, hopefully we offer viewers the same tone and perspective they’ve come to expect from Greenwall Productions. We’re not about fluff – we’re about information and entertainment and we like to get to the point quickly.
If you could compare it to any international movie preview show, which one would it be?
There are literally hundreds of them out there. Ours just contextualises local releases. Like I said – we’re not trying to be “clever” or “different”. We just want to do things with class – hopefully that’s what we’ve achieved.
What is the source of your inspiration?
I’m inspired by mediocrity. When I see something that I think I could do better, it inspires me to give it a try.
How are you going to ensure that viewers stay tuned to the show?
For me these types of shows are all about pace. Each episode features up to 15 different films in a 22-minute slot. The idea is to give audiences a bird’s-eye-view of what’s on offer. It’s an education in pop culture if nothing else.
This year has been a good year for local films and next year could be even better – are you excited at the amount of content this will give The Big Picture?
For sure. It’s great to see local films competing for audiences alongside international releases. The box office never lies.
What do you think about the growth of the local film industry?
I think we’re still a service industry for the most part. We offer a great location and great crews – it’ll take a while for us to get to the level of, say, New Zealand or Australia.

Meet Isidingo's new Charlie Holmes- Michaella Russell

Isidingo has a new lass in town- Michaella Russell, who replaces Jay Anstey as the troubled Charlie Holmes. She makes her debut on the show in early January.

At the recent SABC Press Screening, which ended abruptly after news of Nelson Mandela's death, we were introduced to Michaella and I managed to steal her for a few minutes to talk to her about replacing Jay and what we have to expect from the new Charlie Holmes.

Michaella revealed to me that Charlie still feels guilty about killing her rapist, Quinton. But then she’s also hasn't dealt with being raped. “There’s a mixture of guilt, regret, but also she’s trying to hide it from her dad and her friends,” Michaella said. She said that Eddie is happy to have Charlie back. "They have a very special bond, a much better relationship than the one she has with her mother. Or rather, smother," she said, laughing.

There's also  a potential love interest for her and it’s not Benjamin Le Roux.  "It's someone that viewers are not expecting it to be. I really hope that viewers will love it and will also like my work on screen. Jay was a fantastic Charlie and now I just have to add more depth to her. I have my work cut out for me."

Apparently Jay didn't know that her role was being re-cast. Not that we are surprised. There are some interesting things happening at Isidingo. Headwriters change as often as Rihanna's hairstyles and the executive producer, Pumla Hopa, is now apparently writing and directing most scenes. Their publicists have also been leaving Endemol and we've finally received word that e.tv's Dambisa Maqoga is joining Isidingo as their publicist. Let's hope that she stays.

A Twitter TV Series? Bring.It.On.

Our sister news site, The Wrap, reports that there are plans for a TV series about the beginnings of Twitter.

According to the report, Lionsgate TV has acquired the rights of The New York Times' Nick Bilton's book; Hatching Twitter: A true Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal and is planning to adapt the book into a TV series. Bilton will also write and produce on the show. Allison Shearmur of The Hunger Games movies will executive produce.

In a statement released by Lionsgate TV, Hatching Twitter  “presents a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of the creation of the social media service by four friends and its evolution into a juggernaut that changed the world. Bilton sheds light on the relationships, battles, power grabs and betrayals along the way in one of the most talked-about books of the year.”

To read more on the story, head on over to The Wrap

We look forward to the casting news. However, we wonder if it would actually work as a TV series- maybe a mini series on cable channels? It needs to be a drama and from what I've read, it will be an inside look into the mysterious world of Silicon Valley. Hatching Twitter was voted by Wall Street Journal as the best book of 2013.

Here's what Twitter users are saying about the project

Generations actress, Maggie Benedict bust for shoplifting

Maggie Benedict, who plays Akhona Griffths on SABC 1's Generations, was arrested for alleged shoplifting at a Checkers supermarket in Johannesburg.

The 32 year old actress was detained by security personnel and the police yesterday after allegedly stealing a 125g packet of painkillers.
A case of shoplifting has apparently been opened and Benedict will be appearing at the Randburg Magistrates Court.

Just to put things into perspective, 125 grams of Panado cost between R9 and R15 at most retailers.

The story was first broken on Twitter, by a tweeter who witnessed Benedict being bundled into a police van. The tweeter, @Tumacious, tweeted the popular gossip blog, Just Curious with the information about the drama.

Benedict has left the soapie and is said to be focusing on her studies. She's an award winning actress, winning the 2011 Best Actress SAFTA for her stunning work in 2010's The Mating Game. She has also appeared in 7de Laan, Geraamtes in die Kas, Hard Copy, Binneland and Isidingo. She's also a stage actress.

We will update if there's any further news.

Demi Lovato leaves The X-Factor

Simon Cowell has confirmed that Demi Lovato is leaving the show. The X-Factor US judge has been part of the show since the second season and will now not be returning for the not as confirmed yet, fourth season.
Simon Cowell took to Twitter last night to lay to bed the rumours about Lovato leaving the show to focus on her music.

But is the show returning? Various TV news websites are reporting that sources at Fox say the might not even be a fourth season. It's no secret that The X-Factor is struggling ratings wise in the US (and in SA, when you think about it) and the constant changes may be the reasons why. All three seasons have had different judges. Season one had Simon, LA Reid, Cheryl Cole and Paula Abdul on the panel. Then Simon fired Cheryl and replaced her with Nicole Scherzinger, who was originally the host of the show. At the end of the season, Paula and Nicole were fired.

Season two had Simon, LA, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. LA and Britney left and Simon drafted Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio to join the third season panel. Now with Demi leaving at the end of the season, that's a FOURTH major change in FOUR seasons. There's also word that Simon might not be one of the judges next season.

He tweeted a few hours ago about the fourth season...

Let's see what's going to happen. But Kelly Rowland has been a gem this season and she should be staying on as the judge.

Here's the round table discussion with THR she had a few weeks ago with Julia Roberts,. Lupita Nyong'o, Amy Adams, Octavia Spencer and Emma Thompson.

Glee 100: Who's returning for the special episode

Even though Glee's best days are behind the show, it's 100th episode will sure be a hit and one that we are looking forward to watching.

Ryan Murphy has been tweeting all the actors who will be returning for the show for the special episode and this includes Dianna Agron, who stars as Quinn Fabray, who was famously not invited for the Cory Monteith/Finn Hudson tribute episode.

Word is that Gwyneth Paltrow, Idina Menzel, and other former guest stars will also be starring in the episode. Fans of the show have been asked to vote for their favourite Glee songs to be performed at the hour long special episode.

The episode will air in March next year in the US and in April 2014 in South Africa.

SAG Awards 2014: The Snub List

As with every award nomination announcement, most of us quickly scan who got nominated for their performance and then check who got snubbed. The snub normally gets us all outraged and with good reason.

Now, most always say that TV critics and writers are being hysterical, but what else can one do when some of the best shows and performances of the year are ignored by awards voters?

The Screen Actors Guild awards is seen as one of the fairest awards ceremonies, awarding the true best performers every season, so it's always alarming when they get it wrong.

Here's a list of shows and actors we think deserved a nomination

Tatiana Maslany- Orphan Black

It is us or does Hollywood have a problem with dear old Tatiana? She got snubbed by the Emmy voters and now by the Screen Actors Guild award voters. Her performance on BBC America's Orphan Black was one of the best of 2013. She convincingly portrayed seven different characters in the clone drama. HOW she was snubbed is a travesty.

Orange is the new Black

Netflix's Orange is the new Black was snubbed. OITNB was snubbed. It's unbelievable. It's one of the most glaring omissions and it makes us wonder if the voters actually watch TV. While we agree with the movie nods, it's the TV snubs that have us worried. The critically acclaimed series deserved an Outstanding Drama Series and also a Outstanding Ensemble Cats for a Drama Series. OITNB boasts the best ensemble cast for 2013 and it's a shame that it wasn't nominated.

Amy Poehler and Parks and Recreation

I think it's getting old that Amy Poehler still keeps getting snubbed for awards. Parks is one of the best comedy shows on TV and while it doesn't boast great ratings, it's longevity is proof that there is a need for comedy shows like it. Amy's performance as Leslie Knope is really impressive and she delivers all the time. We are never surprised when she's snubbed, but man, why nominate Tina Fey for 30Rock, which has ended, instead of Amy for Parks? She and Tina are hosting the Golden Globes. Will Amy get nominated then?

Big Brother Mzansi is Back and will be hosted by Lungile Radu

Actor, presenter, reality star and one of GQ's Best Dressed Men for 2013, Lungile Radu, will be the host of the rebooted  Big Brother South Africa.

In a statement released this morning by M-Net channels, Lungile will host the third season of the show, which is making a return after an 11 year hiatus.

While we don't really get the popularity about the show, it's not surprising that M-Net decided to bring it back. It was pretty controversial in its hey days and we understand that viewers miss the drama that the local contestants brought to the show.

Lungile said that he is looking forward to his time hosting the show. "It’s an opportunity for me to learn what goes into making this massive production.  It appeals to the presenter but also to the producer in me. It will also give me the chance to hone my live presenting skills. Being on-air in real time is one of the most challenging aspects of TV presenting and there’s no better place to master that skill than on a program where unpredictable characters, shocking twists and unexpected turns are in fact, normal.”

The show will start with on 2 February 2014 at 7pm, with a two hour premiere on Mzansi Magic.

SAG Awards 2014 Nominees

The Screen Actors Guild have announced the nominees for the 2014 edition of the awards. Although we agree with most of the nominations (hello Mayim Bialik, Outstanding Actress in a Leading Role); we also are surprised at some of the inclusions (Top of the Lake, 30Rock) and shocked at the exclusions (Orange is the New Black; Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany).

The awards take place on Saturday, 18 January 2014. M-Net normally broadcasts the awards the next day. We will confirm with them whether they will be showing the awards and when.

*** Press Release***

For more than 60 years, Nelson Mandela has stood as an  icon of unwavering resolve, determination and eloquence, inspiring South Africa – and the world – in his quest for racial equality.  His triumphant walk to freedom after nearly 30 years of imprisonment for standing up against government apartheid is one of the most famous images of the 20th century.  In a moving one hour special, National Geographic Channel celebrates the life of one history's most powerful and dynamic figures, tracing his momentous rise from political prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

Premiering on tonight, 06 December at 9.55pm on National Geographic Channel 181 on DStv, Mandela: His Life and Legacy follows the historic steps of Mandela's journey from his childhood growing up in the household of the Thembu royal family to his work as a young lawyer in Johannesburg, his imprisonment, presidential election and enduring legacy. Joining the African National Congress in his 20s, Mandela spent years trumpeting the cause of equality against a hostile government whose racial injustices had taken a firm hold over the wealthiest country in Africa before his arrest in 1963.

Presented by seasoned journalist Mark Austin, Mandela: His Life and Legacy includes poignant commentary from political officials, close friends and allies of Mandela, including former South African president FW de Klerk and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Archbishop Desmond Tutu as well as fellow prisoner Mac Maharaj.
