21 Icons on SABC 3
21 ICONS South Africa combines photographic portraits and television short films in a captivating series that shares the inspiring stories of South Africans who have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their fields of endeavour. These 21 icons have captured the global imagination with their dignity, humanity, and selfless struggle for a better world. The project is the creation of celebrated photographer and documentary filmmaker Adrian Steirn, who has been working for more than two years on what has become his biggest and most ambitious project to date.
Sunday's episode features former president, F.W. de Klerk. He will go down in history as the white man who finally dismantled apartheid and flung open the doors to a democratic South Africa — a bridge-builder who stared down fierce opposition and criticism from his own people and political party to put the country firmly and fearlessly on the path to peace, equality and justice for all. In the film, FW de Klerk remembers the day in parliament he put South Africa on a new course and reveals what gave him the courage to continue on that difficult road, as well as why he would advise anyone against trying to emulate him.
“What really kept me sort of positive throughout the whole process,” he says
