American Idol S13 Judges Revealed

American Idol judges: Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.

It's finally confirmed- Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. have joined Keith Urban on the 13th season of the hit Fox show, American Idol.  Fox released this image to media outlets early this morning.

The 12th season was one of the most outrageous seasons of American Idol, mostly because of the judges antics, which sadly, shadowed the contestants. While it's common knowledge that the show is suffering from waning interest from viewers, it's still one of the most watched shows in the United States and the antics of former judges, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, made the show's ratings even worse.

With Mariah and Nicki leaving the panel at the end of last season, together with original judge, Randy Jackson, the show now had to fill the vacant judge slots. Former judge, Jennifer Lopez was the first to fill the position, however there was a struggle to find the third and final judge.
Names like Dr. Luke and Will.i.am were thrown around. Even former Idol contestants, like Adam Lambert, Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson, were whispered as potential judges. But none of them were interested. There was even a time where critics asked why not one wants to be an American Idol judge.

Jazz crooner, Harry Connick Jr. availed himself for the show and has officially joined the show as the third judge.

What we think
  • It's a great selection of judges. As sad as we are to admit, Jennifer Lopez is a great judge. She was really great on season 11. We couldn't fault her critique, as shallow as it was sometimes, but she was actually better than Nicki Minaj.
  • Keith was the strongest judge last season, so we are glad Fox and Fremantle Media kept him.
  • Harry has been a mentor on the show a couple of times, so he's familiar with the show and how it works.
  • The variety on the panel is impressive- a country singer, pop star and a jazz crooner. It's the most balanced that it's been in a couple of years. If only Jimmy Iovine had been added as the fourth judge, you know, just for the 'industry professional'.
  • Randy being mentor is a great move. As irritating as he had become over the years (no more Yo Dog's) he was a good judge and he's really knowledgeable about the music business.
  • Ryan Seacrest stays. He's officially the last remaining 'original' on Idol. Fox must be paying him huge amounts of money.
  • We think it's going to be a great season, especially with Nigel Lythgoe having left the show. Word is Nigel actually suggested this panel to the Fox bosses before he got fired. Here is what he has to say about the new Idol judges: "Both Ken Warwick and myself asked for that team last year. It feels a bit like a kick in the teeth," he admitted. "But I'm thrilled for American Idol. At least they've made one good decision this season!"
