Top Billing Dream Home Winner Announced

Top Billing presenter Bonang Matheba and Top Billing House Winner, Mohamed Kajee
Last week Saturday, some of South Africa's top TV and entertainment writers were in Cape Town for the announcement of Top Billing's dream house winner. Held at the exclusive Steenberg Hotel's Catharina Restaurant, the by-invite-only event was a mix of TV personalities, media and some of Cape Town's high society.

From August 2013, Top Billing has been on the search for the winner of the dream house. Thousands of entries were received, which is a sign that we all want a slice of the good life.  “The response we received from the public was overwhelming," said Patience Stevens, Top Billing producer.

Even though the event started later than expected, the winner was finally announced! Mohamed Kajee from Port Elizabeth, and recently a Cape Townian, won the R5,8 million prize of a dream home, a sports car worth R700 000 and a R100 000 Woolworths shopping voucher!
The Top Billing Dream Home
The luxury penthouse apartment worth R5 million is on the Mirage complex in De Waterkant in Cape Town. It boasts 180 degree views of Cape Town, an en-suite bathroom, walk in closet, a fitted kitchen, open plan lounge and a balcony.  The apartment also features a gourmet Miele kitchen, a Hansgrohe bathroom, super-fast unlimited internet usage supplied by Telkom with a 40 megs line, a cutting-edge entertainment centre. It's a pity that it's only one bedroom.

Top Billing has been taking its viewers on the journey of the dream home being started from scratch until completion, which we saw on the show last night. It was designed by by award-winning architect Stefan Antoni  and built by the Nova Group.

Now imagine owning this house and that Infiniti cabriolet? It really is the best of the good life.  Congratulations to both Mohamed and Top Billing for a successful competition.

Top Billing presenter Bonang Matheba and Top Billing House Winner, Mohamed Kajee
Also- how amazing was Bonang last night? We watched with awe as she did the announcement in one take, without the help of an autocue or direction. She simply got the brief for the what was required (she was sitting next to our Buhle Mbonambi at the time) and she just knew what to do. What a talent! Top Billing is truly lucky to have her.

Now the matter about the ratings- what will Tswelopele Productions do about revamping the show? A major overhaul is needed. It's not the presenters. They are good and some of the best in the industry. It's a dream team of presenters.

Right now they stand at 551 000 viewers. A bit more than Nov/December, but down from the 750 000 they boasted early last year.

It's possibly that maybe the viewers are just not relating to the show any more  Most of the targeted viewers are people with DStv and so during that time they are tuned in to other lifestyle shows. Tswelopele Productions' Pasella, on SABC 2 took a six month break and they came back with better content and very refreshed. Maybe it's what Top Billing needs to do. Take a break, re-conceptualise the show and then come back with a big bang!

Miley rocks with Madonna on MTV Unplugged!

Now we are fans of the MTV Unplugged! series. There have been amazing performances, performances that have changed the way we see artists, thanks to the MTV Unplugged! series. So now that it's making a return, we can only applaud that.

Miley Cyrus is the first artist in three years to have a MTV Unplugged performance. She was joined by her idol, Madonna and a whole lot of tongue action (no, not that action) was happening. See the picture.

It aired last night in the US and we'll get to see it on Monday, 3 February 2014, on MTV at 7.40pm. MTV have declared Monday Miley Cyrus Day. So we need to get ourselves ready for Hannah Montana, Partying in the USA and being told that We Can't Stop, before we become Wrecking Balls!

Peep the video below for the trailer

Five of the most iconic (and our favourite) MTV Unplugged performances, ever

Kenny Kunene is Comedy Central's new Roastee

Kenny Kunene: Liker of Things
#TheRoastofKennyKunene- it sounds better, doesn't it? Leon Schuster may be a polarizing character, but most people are not fond of him or the movies he makes. Most of the roast jokes would have ended up racial and that would have taken the fun out of it. Thank goodness his doctor told him he needs some bed rest!

Now Kenny Kunene- THIS will be a fun one! He's easily the most flamboyant person is South Africa and here are the reasons why he's perfect for the Roast!
  • People actually like him. They like him better than they like Leon Schuster, that's for sure. He may be ridiculous at times and at worst, polarizing, but when you think about it, there will be better, more suitable jokes, rather than awkward jokes. Besides, the Comedy Central Roastee is normally someone people like
  • He's controversial. Whether it's his new money vibes, his penchant for nyotaimori, or wearing two watches, he is one person who will be mocked relentlessly for some of the ridiculous and controversial things he has done.
  • He had a reality show. Granted, it was one of our guilty pleasures. Only Kenny Kunene can give a motivational speech at a club! Like seriously? Also remember Zar? Well that shut down!
  • He had a harem! 16 girls all loved Kenny Kunene! Seriously? It's ridiculous! He is living the life.
  • He's a politician. Hahahahahahahaha
  • He's a DJ. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
  • He's been to jail. (Okay, not funny, but prison jokes could be funny if told correctly)
There are many more reasons and we could go on for days!

Now let's suggest some of the Roasters
  • Eda Rose: Social climber and celebrity hanger on. And ex-girlfriend.
  • Gayton MacKenzie: His best friend and confidante and also his politics mate.
  • Anele Mdoda: She tells it like it is. She aint scurred of nobody!
  • Khanyi Mbau: Did they date or not? Plus she also needs to be roasted
  • Loyiso Gola: Comedian who doesn't like nonsense.
  • David Kibuka: Funny man who also doesn't like nonsense. Tag team effort would be so cool.
  • Gareth Cliff: He's rude, obnoxious. Why not let him Roast Kenny and then he must also be roasted?
  • Julius Malema: Former friend and politics buddy. Kenny dumped Malema's EFF and starting his own party. Betrayal always makes for interesting viewing!
Roast Master:

This is a tough one, but only one person deserves it and that's Tumi Morake!

But we'll see who does what on 28 April 2014 on Comedy Central! Fun times ahead!

Top Billing House Give-away- Must watch TV

Top Billing presenters, Lorna Lukhele and Bonang Matheba (Pic: Bonang's Instagram)
Present at the announcement were presenters, Bonang Matheba and Lorna Lukhele and also  the show's producers, Basetsana Kumalo and Patience Stevens. SABC 3's Head of Channel, Lefa Afrika was also present.

We would love to reveal more, but we are under strict embargoe. So why don't you tune in to Top Billing tonight to see who will win the amazing prize of a house, a car and a R100 000 shopping voucher, tonight on SABC 3.

It certainly was the best of the good life and we got to experience!

OpenView HD Launches 3 new channels

OpenView HD has added three new channels to their bouquet. The channels are Ekurhuleni TV, Bi-Cars TV and United Christian Broadcasting Network.  This now takes the number of channels available on the satellite TV provider to 18.

OpenView HD, which launched last year with four new e.tv channels, hasn't been as successful in getting many subscribers, mostly because many have DStv or StarSat.  The biggest selling point about OpenView is that it's a once off subscription and no monthly payments are expected. Many of us expected that it would lead to many people switching over to OpenView. But as we all know, content is king and that is what determines whether people subscribe to a  satellite TV service.

However, that being said, we are certain that the few who have become OpenView subscribers and were not happy with the content, will be happy with the three new channels.

Here is more information about the channels, provided by OpenView

Ekurhuleni TV

It's a community TV station, the sixth in South Africa, and according to the statement released by OpenView  "It is committed to promoting human rights, social justice and community cultural development. As a community focused station, the channel will air news and views of Ekurhuleni community, ensuring that areas residents see their lives and aspirations reflected on-screen." Ekurhuleni is a municipality on the East Rand, in Gauteng. Programming to be expected on the channel include news, music shows, dramas and local movies (how many do we have that are good?), talk shows and other community development related programmes, from religious, business, sports to events, cultural events and education.

We suggest that OpenView get more community channels like Soweto TV, 1KZN TV, Tswane TV, Bay TV and Cape Town TV. They will surely gain more subscribers.

 Bi-Cars TV

The show is a new reality street Motorsport lifestyle TV channel that showcases motor-sport news, fashion, celebrity riders and real life stories of street Moto-sport lifestyle, entertainment and music. Bi-Cars TV is about lifestyle of bikers, motorist who love street Moto-sport, Moto- fashion, Moto- sport trend setters, spinners, drifters, dragsters and followers (fans). This is a market that shares one of the most expensive sport, with professionals from different sectors and love spending money on, and are passionate on their hobby (Moto – Sport)
Programming to be expected on the channel includes Mzansi Celebrity Bikers, Bi-Car Make Over, Battle of Crews, BC League and Torque Show.

Great going. A local, dedicated channel for petrol heads. But they do have competition as Top Gear has set the standard for what car shows should be like. Let's hope that it's a quality channel and that viewers will tune in. With niche channels like this, it's important to always have fresh content. While repeats are common, there should generally be at least 8 hours of new content a day.

United Christian Broadcasting Network (UCB Network TV)

This is a channel that offers something for the entire family,  is a Christian based channel providing religious content that is both entertaining and uplifting. UCB Network TV broadcasts a mix of preaching and variety shows ranging from health programs to kiddies cartoons.  The channel’s offerings includes programming such as Men of Honour, Women in me, Pastor's Corner, Africa Talent Show, It's not over yet (Another chance), Nuggets of Wealth and Leadership, U kids.

Christian programming is popular. We've seen this with TBN, God TV. This is a no-brainer for OpenView.

We hope that OpenView will keep getting more channels. Not only that, but spend some money acquiring different channels and shows, creating quality local content. With DTT coming into play soon, OpenView has opened the doors and with FreeVision TV also launching in a few months, we are now getting a variety, which should change the way Free-to-Air TV sees itself and starting to actually compete by having quality programming.

DStv's Oscar Pistorius Channel: Is it a good idea?

Yesterday, DStv released a statement announcing that they will be having a dedicated channel for the upcoming Oscar Pistorius murder trial. It will be a 24 hour channel on DStv channel 199. Titled The Oscar Pistorius Trial: A Carte Blanche Special it will be round the clocj coverage of the legal proceedings and also documentaries and in-depth analysis on the sports star the trial he faces for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

The trial begins on Monday, 03 March 2014. It will be produced by Carte Blanche producers and will be available for DStv Premium, Extra and Compact subscribers.

Head of content at Multichoice, Aletta Alberts said that the channel was to give viewers in-depth coverage of the trial. "This pop-up channel will give our viewers in-depth coverage of the Oscar Pistorius trial, with a rich variety of content and social media integration. This is the first time DStv is using a pop-up channel to cover a major news event. We previously added dedicated channels for special events such as Idols and Big Brother."

DStv also had a dedicated channel for all Nelson Mandela related content in December.

What we think

Nicely done DStv! This is arguably one of the biggest story in South Africa. It's the spectacular fall from grace of an adored sportsman, one who was respected and adored. Pistorius was an inspiration for many athletes for his achievements in athletics, be it able bodied or Paralympians.

Reeva Steenkamp and Oscar Pistorius at the 2012 SA Sports Awards
The tragic night of 13 February 2013 is still etched on many South African's  minds and the shocking news that Pistorius had shot his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

It was going to be necessary for one of the local broadcasters to have a dedicated channel as it is the biggest news story of 2014. It's a story that the international press will be showing major interest to and we wouldn't put it past CNN, SkyNews, BBC World News and Aljazeera to have dedicated news feeds on the trial.

So well done to DStv for once again, being ahead of the pack. Now we hope that this will make e.TV sit up and allow the OpenView HD subscribers access to their eNCA channel. This is a major news story and every South African should have access to it.

We hope that South African news channels will be leading the coverage and we won't have to rely on CNN and the other international news agencies for the latest news. Let's own this story. Let the local media set the agenda on what the world will be hearing about the trial.

StarSat loses yet ANOTHER channel

Is there anything that is going well with StarSat? Instead of getting more (and new) channels, it's instead losing channels, the latest one being KidsCo.

In a statement released by On Digital Media and StarSat, the kids channel has been discontinued in February. Here's the press release, below for more details:

*** Press Release***

Pay television  StarSat (previously TopTV) announced that the KidsCo childrens channel will be discontinued at midnight on 13 February 2014. This is as a result of  a decision by the channel’s owners to stop producing the channel.

StarSat is currently in the process of sourcing a replacement children’s channel, since the broadcaster is cognisant of the need for good children’s content on the platform.

This is so irritating! What is wrong with StarSat? Why do they keep losing channels? And the reason they gave is not really making much sense. *sigh* It must be so frustrating for StarSat subscribers.

This GIF of Alicia Florrick expresses our frustration with the channel.

MTV's Are You The One

The Cast of MTV's Are You The One?
*sigh* As if we don't have enough dating reality shows already. First we have The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Mamas Boys and now MTV brings us Are you the One? And that's not all. There are more than 100 shows about dating competitions. Isn't it odd? Check the full list here

What is it with these dating type shows? Surely we should all know by now that they do not work. Hardly anyone chosen by the bachelor(ette) ever gets hitched with them, so why even bother? The answer? Ratings.

One can't deny that these shows are ratings monsters, but after a while, it gets really boring. They are just there for the shock factor and honestly, we are bored with them. But MTV realises that there is a market for these type of shows and so they've jumped on the bandwagon, even if it's different. Peep the video below and the press release to see what it's about. If you like the trailer, then tune in on Thursday, 30 January at 8.30pm

*** Press Release***

MTV (DStv Channel 130) will conduct a social experiment on modern love with the new series Are You the One? – helping 10 women and 10 men find their perfect match. These hopeful romantics participated in a rigorous matchmaking process using a unique dating algorithm created to help quantify compatibility. The result? Recommended matches for the 20 singles with the goal of meeting the perfect partner. Using this technology, 10 ideal pairs have been identified and will ultimately come face-to-face with their true match – the catch is that the results were kept a secret from the singles. Throughout the course of the season, each of the potential lovers must uncover the mystery of their soul mate’s identity.

Are You the One? will select 10 single women and 10 single men who have had no luck in finding lasting love and will first conduct a thorough assessment, using a team of professional matchmakers, psychologists, and the participant’s family, friends and exes, to determine their other half. The process will include in-depth interviews, questionnaires and compatibility testing to achieve the ultimate results. Produced on the picturesque island of Kauai, Hawaii, the 20 singles chosen will live together knowing that their perfect match may be in the room right next to them. Viewers will be able to follow the ups and downs as each person gets potentially one step closer to finding romantic bliss, and their reactions can be as surprising as their choices.

In addition to getting to know one another socially, the 20 singles will undergo weekly tests of physical attraction, personality traits, relationship history assessments and more. During the quest to pick their match, the singles discover that following their heart might feel right, but if the data does not make a match they have to start their search over, leaving budding relationships behind causing tension and despair. At the end of each week, the 20 potential lovers will scramble to find who they believe is their perfect match. If all 10 couples match up with their pre-determined partners within 10 attempts, they will share the largest cash reward MTV has ever offered and more importantly, will walk away with a prized romance.

How are these shows so popular? But then we won't judge. We also have our guilty pleasures and we don't want anyone judging us for them.

Published: Nondumiso Tembe talks Miss Mya with Us

Miss Mya the Queen Bee

Nondumiso Tembe (Pic: Ricardo Marcus K)
Buhle Mbonambi chats to Durban-born and LA-based Generations star Nondumiso Tembe

The champagne-guzzling, cocaine-sniffing and stripper pole-clinging Miss Mya has shaken up Generations. Her party animal antics have either made viewers switch off or tune back in.
Miss Mya is Nondumiso Tembe’s first role in a local TV series. Being cast in the show has always been a dream for Nondumiso – who has appeared on True Blood, NCIS and NCIS: LA  – and she’s taken to the role with gusto. There’s something dark and intriguing about Miss Mya and Nondumiso is doing justice to the character.

Joining the cast of Generations is a big deal in SA. It’s a launch pad to stardom for many local actors. Is it the same for you, even with your success in LA?
Like most South Africans, I grew up watching Generations. The show has a very special place in my heart, so Yes! It s A big deal to me to be a part of it!
What attracted you to the role?
As an artist, you have to be careful not to allow yourself to get too 'comfortable.' Once people see that you can do something really well, you end up playing the same role or 'quality' over and over throughout your career and you don't really grow. I am very much out of my comfort zone in this character. She is much more wild and overtly sexy and dark than I am. I admit, I found it intimidating at first, but then I realized that this was a great opportunity for me to stretch and challenge myself as an actor and grow and deepen my craft. And that is exactly what has happened!
Miss Mya is a layered and complex character- she must be exhausting to portray?
Yoh! That's an understatement! She does require a lot of energy! But what has been a nice challenge is finding her underbelly; understanding and trying to portray the humanity and pain underneath the exuberant, seemingly carefree, 'I got it all under control, ' party-girl image she presents to the world.
But what’s the actual deal with her? Miss Mya looks like someone who’s running away from her problems and is putting up a happy façade- is she hiding something?
I don't want to reveal too much or I'll ruin things for the viewers, but she has some very dark, painful secrets from her past that she tries to escape from through her party lifestyle and by burying herself in her work. I think it will be great to see her true story unravel and viewers will get to understand why she is the way she is. Everyone copes with life's hardships in different ways. Unfortunately, some people, like Phumelele, end up turning to self-destructive things.
Can you tell us about her background?
She is a successful, well educated, world-travelled fashion executive who grew up in New York, but is originally from KZN
Her family? Senzo mentioned something about her family and she quickly told him to never mention her family ever again. Does the problem lie with her family?
I'm afraid I can't mention too much, but you are right. She has a very dark, dysfunctional family history.
And Senzo- does she plan on just using him as leverage, maybe against his family?
Believe it or not, Phumelele genuinely cares about Senzo and cherishes their friendship. Their connection is very real and honest. It's true that she can be a very selfish, manipulative person, but Senzo is the one person she really lets in.
This is your first role on a local TV show. How has the experience been?
It's been such a revelation for me! I have learned so much, grown so much professionally, in terms of my craft, and have made some very special friendships along the way. I am very grateful for this opportunity and experience.
How different it is from the US?
Very different. Not exactly something I could articulate in words, we are just very distinctly South African. We have our own way of working and relating to each other, which is very unique and different from the American way. It is no better or worse - just different.
Generations is a multi camera TV show and you’ve done mostly single camera TV shows. How has the transition been like?
Working in a multi-cam medium is very different from working on a single-cam drama or on stage. I have learnt so much, just technically speaking. It helps if you think of yourself as a work in progress. I watch all my dailies (daily footage) very closely and examine my performance to try and see how I can be better the next day, see what works, what doesn't work. I watch the way the other actors work with and relate to the cameras. I ask lots of questions. It's like juggling several balls in the air at the same time. You have to be really present and self-aware, but still be as naturalistic as possible.
As a LA based actress, what has been your main difficulty in getting roles?
The amount of competition in Hollywood - there are immeasurably more actors than there are roles available. Racism in the industry. The economy. There are a number of factors that pose a challenge to our industry, but thankfully, God has blessed me and I work pretty consistently.
The issue of race is being addressed by all the major black actors. What will it take for black actors to finally get roles that move them away from the stereotype?
Us taking ownership of our own storytelling. Having more people of colour in decision-making positions in Hollywood. I don't think the actors are the problem. I think the Hollywood system is the problem.
Shonda Rhimes is one of the few black showrunners in Hollywood, with successful shows Grey’s Anatomy, The Fixer and Private Practice. Do you ever plan in going behind the scenes and producing TV shows?
I have produced a little, low scale - it is really a Herculean feat. It is a huge responsibility but you feel so proud when your project finally takes off! I think producing and directing are definitely in my future, but right now I am focused on building my career as an artist. I think I will evolve into these roles organically.
Besides Generations, what are you currently working on?
I've just been cast in a really exciting international television project, which I will start filming in a few months. I am deeply grateful to be starting 2014 off with a bang! I know I will be sad to leave Generations next month (her last appearance on the show is in May) but I will cherish this experience forever and am really proud to be a part of the Generations Family!
So we should expect some major drama with Miss Mya?
Lots of drama, buddy!
Catch Nondumiso on Generations, weekdays at 8pm on SABC 1 (SABC 2 during the CHAN 2014 tournament)

February on TLC

We have a love hate relationship with TLC. It has some really odd shows, but then we love to watch them. Really, who wouldn't want to watch Here Comes Honey Boo Boo? It's iconic and it's a guilty pleasure.

But sometimes we just cannot deal with the shows they screen. Firstly, where do they get these people? Seriously. Where? Are they normal? Are they even real? Check below for the source of our shock. And this includes Best Funeral Ever, which we blogged about a few weeks ago here

Catch up with real-life psychic medium Theresa Caputo and her vibrant family in the entertaining fourth series of Long Island Medium airing on Tuesday, 4 February from 20:00 on TLC Entertainment. With a waiting list of over two years, Theresa has turned numerous sceptics into believers by enabling them to communicate with those who have passed on. However, while Theresa commits herself to helping other families to find peace, her own family – particularly her children – occasionally get annoyed by her inability to turn this gift 'off'.

Lovable Honey Boo Boo, loud ‘n’ proud stay-at-home Mama June, chalk-mining dad Sugar Bear, and sisters Lauryn "Pumpkin", Jessica "Chubbs", Anna "Chickadee” and baby Kaitlyn return for a brand new season of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo on Wednesday, 5 February at 20:00 on TLC Entertainment. Eight-year-old pageant sensation, Alana Thompson (a.k.a. Honey Boo Boo), has already proven that she is not your average beauty queen and when she's not chasing after crowns, she's hanging out with her family in rural Georgia, doing what they do best − four-wheeling through mud pits, playing with the family's pet pig, and chowin' down on cheese balls. From family outings to family shoutings, the series takes us off the pageant stage and into the unapologetically outrageous family life of the Honey Boo Boo clan.

Step inside the world of Golden Gate Funeral Home, the 'it' funeral home of the South. Owned by Mr John Beckwith, Jr, his funerals are not sad, somber events, but rather celebrations of life and anything but ordinary. Families come to Golden Gate because they want a fabulous celebration in memory of their loved ones; these events take the death out of funerals! Catch all the drama when Best Funeral Ever makes its debut on Monday, 17 February at 20:00 only on TLC Entertainment.

Love makes the world go round, but in some instances, love and sex can lead people to the emergency room with medical mishaps that are bizarre, potentially risky and very, very funny! For the first time, doctors and nurses reveal the most unexpected, irresponsible and often hilarious accounts of sexual medical mishaps. Featuring hysterical and heart-warming documentary-style recreations based on the most outrageous stories ever told about what could go wrong during sex, we hear from women and men who find themselves in the most awkward positions you’ve ever seen – and we’re not talking about the Kama Sutra! Don’t miss Sex Sent Me to the ER premiering on TLC Entertainment on Friday, 21 February from 20:55.

*sigh* Can anyone blame us on why we have such a love/hate relationship with TLC? They are awesome, but yet so odd!

Royalty Soapie Awards Update

The first edition of the Royalty Soapie Awards, the brainchild of Generations actress, Winnie Modise, are on track and will take place on the 8th of March 2014.

The awards, which aim to honour the best of 2013's soap opera performances and behind the scenes work, will be hosted by Hello Doctor's Michael Mol and End Game's Hlomla Dandala. They will take place at the Durban ICC Arena.

We called the organisers to find out how things are going and whether everything on track. They confirmed that everything is on track and the media will be receiving information and updates from February onwards.

"We are still finalising details and also those who will be presenting and performing at the awards," a spokesperson said.  "You can expect the latest news about the RSAs from February onwards, where we will give you the latest information that you need for the awards. Everything is on track and the awards will definitely be taking place on the 8th March."

On Twitter, the RSA account has been tweeting often and today tweeted various actors asking them whether their outfits are ready for the awards and if they have voted for their shows and their fellow actors.

We also can't wait. Peep the video here of Winnie Modise introducing the concept of the RSAs

Channel O will be broadcasting the Grammy's, live on Monday morning. They will then be broadcast later on in the evening on Channel O at 8.30pm. LL Cool J once again returns for hosting duties.

E! Entertainment will of course be live with the Red Carpet at 1am and a repeat later at 5am.  The Grammy Awards Red Carpet is always interesting and brings some of the wackiest fashion known to man. It's sometimes tackier than the VMAs and that's saying something.

The Grammy's have released the list of performers and judging whether you like more urban and pop music, or country and rock, we think that everyone is catered for.

Here's the performers list:

Deliciously Devious Maids

It's soapy goodness that will get you hooked. It definitely hooked the SMtv team last year when we got a sneak preview of the delicious soapy drama, Devious Maids. The premise of the show is about a group of maids who work for some of Beverly Hills' most powerful families. In the the first episode, there's a murder, which sets the tone for the rest of the season. It's a juicy, soapy, whodunit! Each maid has her own story, dreams and reason why they are a maid. Let us not spoil it for you.

Here's a sneak peak of what to expect tonight:

Now meet the maids

Isidingo and SABC pay tribute to Lesego Motsepe

“We are saddened by the news of Lesego’s sudden passing at such a young age. During her years on Isidingo, she was professional and performed to the best of her abilities. We extend our grief and sincere condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed by her friends and colleagues here at Endemol”, says Sivan Pillay, Managing Director of Endemol.

Motsepe’s debut on Isidingo was in 1998 serving a decade to the show. She performed well in her craft, and delivered her role exceptionally. Endemol and Isidingo’s cast and crew will celebrate her contributions to the show. Her legacy, love and influence in acting will remain in the lives and hearts of many South Africans.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) joins the country in mourning the death of Ms. Lesego Motsepe, a renowned South African television and theatre actress. As the SABC we are proud to have contributed to the nurturing of this fine talent.

The corporation would like to send heartfelt condolences to Lesego Motsepe’s family, friends and colleagues. Lesego will be remembered for her immense contribution in the arts industry. Her role as the lively Lettie Matabane on one of South Africa’s popular soapie, Isidingo, captivated millions of South African viewers on our channels.

We saw Lesego’s talent flourishing at an early age as she featured on many productions including the teenage drama, Dynamite Diepkloof Dudes, and from then onwards she blossomed into a great performer she was.

Her face will surely disappear on our minds but her great work will remain and continue to challenge and inspire aspiring and established performers. Lesego Motsepe will be truly missed.

Rest In Peace Lesego Motsepe

Former Isidingo actress, singer and motivational speaker, Lesego Motsepe has passed on. A tweet from Twitter user, @MaBlerh first broke the news that she has passed on. She was found dead by her brother and confirmed dead by paramedics.

A series of tweets from communications firm, Oresego, owned by social commentator, JJ Tabane, then confirmed the news on Twitter.

Lesego was on Isidingo from the 1997 and she was written out of the show in 2008. He character, Lettie Matabane, was killed in a car accident by her friend, Paul (Carl Beukes.)

In an interview with Kaya FM's Bob Mabena, Motsepe spoke about how she felt when she found out her status. Angelique Serrao wrote about the interview here:
Motsepe said that when she found out she was HIV-positive 13 years ago, she wasn’t really shocked. This was because she had been working as an Aids ambassador for years, using puppets to teach children about the virus.

Suddenly, all the things she had been talking about became relevant in her own life.

Nevertheless, the news was life-changing.
“I went through many phases: denial, resentment, rejection and anger,” Motsepe said. “But the most important thing is that I am alive today.”
When people found out about her status, they “just hug me. They can hear in my voice I am not weak. But it has taken a lot of work, a lot of energy, to be where I am today,” Motsepe said.
She advised South Africans to know their status.
“If it’s positive, do something about it. Don’t dig your grave because you are still alive,” she said.
The actress said that she has been on antiretrovirals for just more than a year.
Recounting that her CD4 count was just 99 in October last year, she said she had been close to death’s door.
“For seven weeks, I was down. To be able to pick myself up from that and say I am going to live is something,” Motsepe said.
She said she had to be her own coach and change the way she lived. She had to stop drinking – she used to drink a lot of alcohol – and also has to watch her diet.
“It affects a lot. If I have a headache, I can’t take a headache pill. If my stomach is woozy, I can’t take anything. I can’t take anything that would interfere with the antiretrovirals,” she said.
“I decided that if I was going to live, I would not let this get me down. I don’t say I’m HIV-positive, I say HIV lives in my blood.”
In 2012, she shocked fans and faced backlash, when she admitted on SABC 3's 3Talk her decision to forego ARV's in place of a more holistic treatment, rather using herbs, beetroot, garlic and meditation, to keep healthy. She told Noleen Maholwana-Sangqu that she had "weaned herself off ARVs", against her doctor's advice, because she couldn't bear the thought of taking pills every day for the rest of her life.

We have reached out to SABC 3 and Isidingo for statements and there has been no response yet.

Isidingo paid tribute to their former star on Twitter last night.
 May she Rest In Peace.
