Isibaya Cleans up at Royalty Soapie Awards

Isibaya cleaned up at the first Royalty Soapie Awards, which were held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli  last night. The Mzansi Magic telenovella, which has taken South Africa by storm, was nominated for 18 awards, walking away with 10 awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Soapie.

The awards, founded by Generations actress, Winnie Modise, are a celebration of the soapie genre, the most popular medium of storytelling in South Africa. Isibaya, the new kid on the block, beat out competition from South Africa’s favourite soapies, including Generations, Isidingo, Muvhango and Binnelanders. The e.tv soaps, Scandal and Rhythm City, pulled out of the awards last year and were therefore not in contention.

The legendary Shaleen Surtie-Richards was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her 30-year contribution to the industry and for her memorable roles on soapies such as Egoli, Generations and 7de Laan.

Top Billing’s Michael Mol shared hosting duties with Hlomla Dandala, who was recently seen on SABC 1’s political thriller, End Game. The awards will be broadcast on SABC 1 at a later date.
