UPDATE: Cast of #Generations (@GenActorsGuild) comments and comments from Mfundi Vundla

“We are saddened by this development, but remain steadfast in our goal to ensure fair working conditions for ourselves as creative professionals.”

This is the comment that the former Generations actors, released after they found out that they have been fired from the show. The cast members, Anga Makubalo, Atandwa Kani, Katlego Danke, Mandla Gaduka, Menzi Ngubane, Nambitha Mpumlwana, Patrick Shai, Slindile Nodangala, Sophie Ndaba, Seputla Sebogodi, Thami Mngqolo, Thato Molamu, Winnie Ntshaba,  Zenande Mfenyan, Zikhona Sodlaka, and Zolisa Xaluva  have each received letters of dismissal, with immediate effect from the soapie.

According to the statement which the media has received from the Actors' representatives, the cast have made a decision to examine their legal options.

This is a really tragic situation.

Now the question is, will the cast stay fired or will they return to negotiations and try and sort things out?  Bonang Matheba was 'fired' by the SABC in June/July and she came back to the broadcaster on the 11th August after they ironed out the problems. Will the same happen with the cast?

What we hope is that artists will now pay more attention to their contracts and everything, including what is legally due to them, etc.

Let's also hope that this will now also mean that actors take the business side of the entertainment industry seriously, band together to be members of ONE guild that will represent ALL the actors, instead of the many unions and guilds that are present in the industry.

The SABC's spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago said that the show will go on. He said that  the SABC will communicate all future plans in due course.

Mfundi Vundla's Comments

Mfundi Vundla, the creator and executive producer of the show, went onto Radio 702 when the news broke out and he didn't mince his words about the situation:

"There were other actors before and there will be other actors in the future.Generations will go on,"  he said during an interview with Xolani Gwala. "That’s it! Finish and klaar. It's a termination, it's finished. We won't be taking them back. We are running a business here and there has to be some resolve. We have to bring some certainty to the production. It's final. This is the final decision we've made."
"The actors found Generations and there will still be a Generations in the future for more new actors. Generations will go on, with or without these people. The fact that we've gotten rid of these people doesn't mean it's the demise of the series."

He added that they have episodes until October and that the production company has plans to continue with the soap. "We have episodes up until about October. So we have a few weeks to look for a new cast, we will do what we have to do," he said. "We are professionals and we will do what we have to do to ensure Generations will go on."
