The #Empire is coming! Come get your Cookie on! On @FoxAfrica from March 4

"Drip, drop, drip drippity drop..." That's one song you WILL be jamming along to before the winter is over and it's one of the songs you will hear and most likely fall in love with on Fox Africa's Empire.  Starting on Wednesday, 4 March 2015 at

Now what is Empire?
Well only the best show to hit the screens this year! Set in the interesting world of a hip hop record label, Empire tells the story of the Lyons- Lucious, Cookie, Andre, Jamal and Hakeem- and everything that happens in the company, how they handle things and of course, as with every family, a power struggle. Think King Lear and Macbeth and you'll see what we mean when you tune in.

A musical drama, there is naturally a whole lot of music and the best thing about it is that it's songs you'd actually want to listen to. Having seen a few episodes online, we want to jam to these songs and cannot wait until the full soundtrack is released. Yes. The music is that good. And it's because Timbaland is behind the production.

Who Is Who In the Empire

Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon, a former drug dealer turned hip hop mogul and the CEO of Empire Entertainment, whose life begins to cave in around him after his past sins come back to haunt him following his being diagnosed with ALS.
Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon, Lucious' outspoken ex-wife and mother of his three sons, who served a 17-year stretch in prison for drug dealing. She sees herself as the sacrificial lamb for Empire, which she built with Lucious, but then took the fall for when she was arrested for running the drugs that financed Lucious' early career. Upon her return from prison she is determined to bring the Lyon family back together.
Trai Byers as Andre Lyon, the eldest son of the Lyon family and CFO of Empire Entertainment. He is Wharton educated and power hungry and suffers from bipolar disorder. He is also married to his college sweetheart, Rhonda. He plans to run Empire but is in a battle for the head chair with his younger brothers.
Jussie Smollett as Jamal Lyon, the middle son and black sheep of the Lyon family, a talented, gay singer-songwriter who despises the corporate aspect of the music industry and is estranged from his homophobic father. Jamal is considerably Cookie's favourite and has a strong relationship with Hakeem.
Bryshere Y. Gray as Hakeem Lyon, the fame-obsessed youngest son and Lucious' favourite child, who is a hip hop star on the rise. Hakeem hates Cookie, but a great relationship with Jamal.
Grace Gealey as Anika Calhoun, head of Empire Entertainment A&R and Lucious' fiancé. Cookie and Anika share an extreme dislike for each other.
Malik Yoba as Vernon Turner, Lucious' longtime friend and business partner, and chairman of Empire Entertainment.
Kaitlin Doubleday as Rhonda Lyon, Andre's manipulative and power hungry wife

Why you MUST Watch Empire

We did already say it's the best show this year, right? What more do you need for us to convince you to watch Empire? It really is good and we promise, you WILL enjoy it. It's that good. Need more? Well, here it is.
  • It's soapy goodness. It's the edge that is very cable drama, but still has that suitable for the whole family kind of TV viewing.
  • Dynasty would be proud to see that it has finally been given a worthy show to be compared to.
  • It's one of the most watched shows on TV, breaking records by rising every. single. week. It's that good.
  • TV critics love it. Besides the bougie ones who think the show is beneath them (there's like 1 out of 100) it's been given great reviews by all the critics who matter. And they know what they are talking about.
  • New faces. We all love it when shows launch new faces and this is one show that does that.
  • Notable guest stars. HUGE stars. Naomi Campbell,Macy Gray as Tasha, Courtney Love as Elle Dallas, Derek Luke, Gabourey Sidibe,Tasha Smith, Cuba Gooding Jr., Gladys Knight, Anthony Hamilton, Sway Calloway, Raven-Symoné.
  • It's from an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning and nominated team. Lee Daniels and Danny Strong. They know what they are doing and it's evident.
  • Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Cookie. Taraji gives an award winning performance as Cookie Lyon that you won't help but fall in love with! Trust us. Soon you'll be hating on #BooBooKitty and loving #TeamCookie

Is that reason enough to convince you to watch Empire? We sure hope so!

Don't forget to tune in, from Wednesday 4 March 2015, on FOX!

All About the New #Zabalaza, which starts tonight on @MzansiMagic at 9pm

Zabalaza moves into a new storyline, with an exciting new location and a line-up of superb new characters played by some of the country’s top acting talent, among them Zolisa Xaluva (formerly Jason Malinga of Generations) and Rosie Motene (formerly Tshego Motene of Generations).

This new era of Zabalaza sees the show’s characters step into an urban milieu that has all the ingredients of a 21st century soapie – a tangle of sex, drugs, egos, back-stabbing and sometimes lethal ambition.

Now shrugged free of the legacy of the old, a great deal of Zabalaza’s action takes place in the Braamfontein offices of an events management company that has its eyes on making it to the top of a hotly contested industry.

With two company directors, two employees and a bevy of interns and freelancers, Slick Vic Media has a client list that is deeply impressive – but that also features some of Johannesburg’s less salubrious characters.

Heading the charge towards glitz and glory is Sydney Lwana, played by Zolisa Xaluva. Sydney is Slick Vic Media’s MD, who fancies himself as a citizen of the world but who harbours dark desires that would create a rift between him and his creative director, Victor Ndou.

Perpetually single and always a player, Victor is played by Bohang Moeko (a previous Mr South Africa finalist). Only Victor’s mother, Victoria, a deal-maker in the mining and media industries, holds much sway over Slick Vic Media’s Creative Director. Sharp-witted – and even sharper-tongued – Victoria is played by Rosie Motene.

Other new characters in  Zabalaza include: Tessa Twala as Lexi Thabane – a PR assistant who rapidly realises that she will never be treated as an equal at Slick Vic Media and so joins a rival company as she journeys to a position of power.

Angela Sithole plays Terry Ramotsetsi, a PR Guru and member of the now generation who finds love in all the wrong. The list of new cast members is completed by Tango Ncetezo (Lindiwe in A Place Called Home Season 2) who takes on the role of Mapule Pule, a workaholic production manager who must try and reconcile the conflict between the values that she believes in and what is needed to succeed in the hard-bitten event industry.

Don’t miss Zabalaza: A New World on February 26th – simulcast on Mzansi Magic & Mzansi Wethu at 9PM.

@Club808's new presenters- Boity Thulo and Cyprian Ndlovu

Ah, new blood.

The thing about new blood is that we expect them to inject new LIFE into a show, especially one that has seen a lot of host changes in the past year and a half. e.tv's Club808, which is in it's fifth year (time sure does fly), has had several host changes. Mo Flava was the original host, alongside Dineo Ranaka. Dineo left and Mo was joined by Thando Thabethe. When Thando left, Mo was joined by the legendary controversial Nonhle Thema.

Then Mo decided to leave and Nonhle followed soon after that, leaving e.tv with the task of filling in two spots for their prime time music show. And we think they have found the perfect pair in Boity Thulo and Cyprian Ndlovu. And this is why

1. They are Young: Every channel wants to attract young people, so who better than two, hot young entertainment fixtures?

2. They are Hungry: They are not famed for their presenting prowess. But by e.tv putting them in the deep end, they are forcing them to make sure that they work hard enough to attract and keep an audience. They are more or less at the same level, presenting skills wise, so it's going to be equal footing for everyone.

3. They are Hot: Boity has for many a time topped the many Hot/Sexiest Lists in South Africa and Cyprian is a handsome fella too. That not only means that their fans are going to tune in, but being visually appealing is always one of the things people look for in a presenter. These two are hot, they know it and they will use it. There's no shame in that.

4. They Want to Impress: They have to impress and as stated above, hunger for success is always a great motivator for someone to do well. They have nothing stopping them from impressing- they just need to up their game, be true to who they are and not try be someone else.

The new Club808 airs next Friday, 6 March 2015, on e.tv at 6pm (new timeslot).

Mo and Nonhle's last show is this Friday, 27 February 2015 on e.tv at 8pm

*** Press Release***

Cyprian Ndlovu and Boity Thulo are the new presenters of Club 808

Every party scene needs a dash of something new, absolute and ultra-cool and this is why e.tv’s flagship music show, Club 808, is about  to get a revamp. Fresh, vibrant presenters Boity Thulo and Cyprian Ndlovu will help viewers kick off their weekend every Friday in the show’s new time slot at 6PM from March 6.

The #Oscars2015 race ends tonight in the US. @Buhlebonga and @SihleMthembuZA pick @SM_Magazine's winners

And the Oscar goes to…

Neil Patrick Harris will host the 87th Academy Awards on Sunday.

The Oscar race ends tonight in the US. Buhle Mbonambi and Sihle Mthembu pick their winners

And what a race it has been. It has been difficult to predict and it is anybody’s game. The Academy Awards (airing live on M-Net Movies Premiere tomorrow at 3am; later on M-Net at 7.30pm) are sometimes known for surprises, so possibly this is the one year they will surprise again. With Birdman and Boyhood leading the charge, we pick those who will and those who should win an Oscar.

Best Picture: This race is almost too close to call between Birdman and Boyhood.
Who should win: Birdman, an intelligent and engaging film about the nature of fame. The performances, direction, cinematography and the story make it one of the best films in recent years.
Who will win: Birdman will just take it only because Boyhood was released too early and while popular, has exhausted its goodwill in Hollywood.

Best Actor: Easily the most difficult category to predict.
Who should win: Bradley Cooper in American Sniper. Despite the film and the character it portrays being problematic, Cooper’s performance is flawless. It shows his growth, proves his prowess and finally dispels the belief that he can only do great work with David O Russell.
Who will win: Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Stephen Hawking has won him all the majors.

Best Supporting Actor: It’s a one-horse race as always, which is surprising, given the performances.
Who should win: Edward Norton. It’s been a while since Norton has had so much fun on screen in Birdman.
Who will win: JK Simmons. His performance in Whiplash was loved by everyone, so it’s obvious he will win.

Best Actress: The easiest category this year.
Who should win: Julianne Moore, Still Alice. The most substantial performance she has given since A Single Man and The Kids are All Right. Plus her chemistry with Alec Baldwin is perfect.
Who will win: Julianne Moore. There’s no contest.

Best Supporting Actress: A tough one, with two frontrunners.
Who should win: Emma Stone, an elegant and loose performance in a really good film. But Patricia Arquette also gave a career best performance.
Who will win: Patricia Arquette because she was brilliant. She’s won every single major award for this role. It would be a shame if she lost.

Best Director: A two-horse race between Richard Linklater (Boyhood) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman)
Who should win: Richard Linklater, who directed the same film over 12 years. Boyhood is also an amazing story.
Who will win: Richard Linklater. Iñárritu’s Birdman is popular (and excellent) but we think Linklater deserves to win.

Nominees List for the 2nd @SoapieAwards

The nominees party for the 2nd annual Royalty Soapie Awards, the brainchild of former Generations actress, Winnie Ntshaba, took place on Thursday in Jo'burg.

From the pictures we saw of the event, it seems the industry has finally decided to support the awards, which is a step in the right direction. Soapies are big in SA. Dramas and comedy play second fiddle to soapies when it comes to TV in SA and it's great that the industry is giving the awards a chance. It's also good to see that e.tv didn't pull diva stunts this year and entered the awards. Good move.

Now Isibaya won the most awards last year and they are, once again, leading with the most awards nominations, alongside e.tv's Scandal, at 16 each. SABC 2's 7de Laan is a close third with 14 nominations.

It's surprising that after such a turnaround by SABC 3's Isidingo, they don't feature as prominently as they should, especially since the show and quality of acting was head and shoulders above all the soapies last year. But at least the main actors were nominated for their excellent work.

The awards will take place on 28 March 2015 in Durban and will be hosted by the Goliath's- Jason and Donovan.

Farewell, @Noeleen3Talk #3Talk

This is a huge moment in SA TV history. It's as big as Oprah Winfrey's iconic show coming to an end a few years ago. Noeleen Maholwana-Sanqgu has been in our homes for the past 12 years and it's incredible that only now it has hit us that her show has been so embedded into our pysche.

After 12 years, SABC3 and Noeleen have confirmed that she will be hanging up her shoes and leaving the show. The last broadcast of 3Talk is on Monday, 20 April 2015.

In the last few years, we have been rather bored (for lack of a better word) with the show and felt that it needed a makeover, drastically. We complained about the same people coming on the show, the structured, 'we know what to expect' thing about the show and the lack of a studio audience that we felt will take the show to a whole other level.

Anyway now that the show is ending, and it's sad. The show has some faithful viewers, so to them it's a huge loss.

"After coming to you live every afternoon live for 12 years, the show will be ending on 20 April," Noeleen said at the beginning of her show today (Monday, 15 Feb 2015). "After giving it a lot of thought, I let SABC know early last year that I had decided to hang up my 3Talk shoes and bring this amazing adventure to an end at the end of this season. The botton line is I was not fired. Do not say it again."

Various publications, notably Media24's Sunday Sun, reported that the Noeleen had been fired by the channel. So it seems that Noeleen decided to leave the show on her own. Okay.

So, now what? Will SABC 3 be doing a whole new show? We sure hope so. Plus we expect it to be a very youth (under 35) focused show, which will fit in with SABC 3's current target audience. A panel discussion show (NOT Tongue In Cheek) would be perfect or even a normal talk show, just with a studio audience.

I guess we shall have to wait and see.

Here is the full statement below by SABC3.

SOUTH AFRICA’S “QUEEN OF TALK” NOELEEN HANGS UP HER 3TALK SHOES

After 12 years of continuing the country's conversations every afternoon on SABC3, 3Talk will be coming to an end on the 20th of April, 2015.
The show has enjoyed an unprecedented run on South African television and has been fortunate to be a part of viewers' daily routines for over a decade.
After such a long journey with the show, Noeleen Maholwana Sangqu decided a year ago that she would be hanging up her 3Talk shoes at the end of the current season.
"When we started the show, I could never have imagined that we would have such an enduring relationship with our viewers. I have had the most fabulous 12 years on 3Talk. It's been an amazing adventure which has brought so much fun and meaning into my life, but after a lot of thought, I think it's time for me to bid farewell," remarked Noeleen.
“We are sincerely grateful to Noeleen for her incessant support, commitment and professionalism over the last 12 years. Noeleen has moved, inspired and empowered our viewers through the many episodes of 3Talk. It is the end of an era” said Aisha Mohamed, SABC3 Head of Bouquet.
“SABC3 viewers can expect the channel to keep in line with its lifestyle offering post the last season of 3Talk. The channel will continue to bring viewers entertaining variety and lifestyle content which will be communicated closer to launch date,” continued Aisha.
Keep watching 3Talk every afternoon at 4pm on SABC3, as we wind down towards the end of an era.

Breaking: Comedy Giants, the Goliaths, to host Royalty Soapie Awards (@SoapieAwards)

Comedians, Donovan Goliath (Strictly Come Dancing) and Jason Goliath (Ses'Top La) will host the 2015 Royalty Soapie Awards on Saturday, 28 March at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban, ICC).

Two Goliaths will bring their brand of humour, style and panache to South Africa’s awards ceremony that celebrates excellence in television soap operas.

“Our inaugural event last year set a very good standard, so as we present the second edition of the Royalty Soapie Awards, we believe the Goliaths will bring a fresh twist to proceedings,” said project director Sindile Xulu.

The Goliaths are giants on the comedy circuit:  their monthly flagship show – AWEdnesday, and the weekly serving - The Box at the PopArt, and a host of other shows around the country continue to be a hit with audiences.

Both Donovan and Jason have been nominated twice as best Breakthrough Act in in the Comics Choice Awards.

“I'd like to thank my mahda, my fahda, my cousin brahda for hosting these awards – Amen,” said Royalty Soapie Awards MC, Donovan Goliath.

The nominees of the 2015 Royalty Soapie Awards will be announced on 19 February.
